About the Author

Title Page || 1: What this book is about

Wilfred Sergeant was Superintendent of Commuter Services for Canadian National Railways (CN) from 1965-71. Under his leadership, the Toronto commuter train system, GO-TRANSIT, was built. Sergeant brought his expertise from working with the London Underground in his native England and his career experience with CN to the GO-TRANSIT project. He had immigrated to Canada in the 1950s. He is now retired and living in Largo, Florida. Not one to sit idly by, he is Vice President, Planning and Operations, of Sky Train Corporation, an effort to build a mass transit system for the Tampa Bay area.

A people person, evident to anyone who has met him, he naturally writes of the people who built GO-TRANSIT. Through his numerous interviews, we gain a special insight into the problems and successes of building Canada's first commuter train service.
