Azuela (1873-1952) was a physician who became served in
the army of Pancho
Villa. The infighting during the Mexican
Revolution disillusioned him. Los de Abajo (The Underdogs) has
the seeds of this disillusionment as one reads that the soldiers were never sure
why they were killing. Villa
himself was a political primitive who fought injustice but was naive in national
politics.
The book did not gain recognition until about 1924, after
the Revolution was over but, even though it is fiction, it gives us insight into
the Mexican Revolution.
