SUBJECT: Commendation.
TO : Commanding General, 1st U. S. Infantry Division.

In the operations just completed, which lasted from April 23rd to May 9th, the 1st Infantry Division continued to prove that as fighting unit it is second to none. In the fighting around Hill 575, Hill 350 on Djebel Reml, Djebel Ang. Djebel Mefta, in the mountains east of Hill 609 and the hills north of Chouigui Pass, the 1st Infantry Division showed the usual aggressive qualities.

Despite the bitter resistance offered by the enemy and the terrain, the Division always accomplished the mission given to it. I am sure that there are many more brilliant victories ahead. May I congratulate each and every member of the Division, and of the units attached to it, for his part in its fine achievements.

My personal thanks to every member of the "Fighting First", for the gallant way in which you executed your vital role in the Tunisian victory.

In the final Allied drive on Tunis, from April 23rd to May 9th, the 1st Infantry Division was assigned a most difficult mission. It necessitated continuous attacks to break the hinge of enemy resistance in formidable terrain, well fortified and stubbornly defended by the best combat units of the German Africa Corps, including the Barenthin Regiment and the 334th Mountain Divisional Your mission was accomplished hard fighting and skillful teamwork of all combat elements, and by effective continuous functioning of all service elements, under arduous conditions.

Your continued untiring devotion to duty has been a vital factor in winning the final victory in North Africa.
