Principal Problems of the Conquest and Initial Colonization (revised)

1. Exploration and identification of territory and what was in it.
2. Conquering and controlling Amerinds. Didn't do things to sustain Indian population. There was a 90% reduction in Indian population by 1650.
3. Creation of institutions that would provide:

a. an orderly life in America--done wall
b. permit effective metropolitan control over colony--pretty effective

4. In places, there were large Amerind populations. Had to change their behavior to got things done in the European way.
5. System problems:

  1. distance (evasion of orders)
  2. ordinary problems of human ambition
  3. wealth
