T. R. Roosevelt, Jr. Goodbye to 1st Infantry Division

HEADQUARTERS 1ST U. S. INFANTRY DIVISION
APO #302
U. S. Army

6 August 1943 TO THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE FIRST DIVISION:

More than 26 years ago the 1st Division was formed, and I joined it at that time. I have served with it in two wars and have served with no other unit.

We have been together in combat; we know each other as men do only when they have been battle comrades. I do not have to tell you I think of you, for you know. You will always be in my heart.

I have been ordered away. It is a great grief to go, and my hope is that sometime I may return, for it is with you that I feel I belong.

Your record is splendid. You are known an assault troops the world aver. You will add in the future new honors to our history.

May luck go with your battle worn colors as glory always has.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT,
Brigadier General, U. S. A.
