Reyes, Alfonso (1889-1959)
Born in Monterrey, Nuevo León May 17, 1889, the son of General Bernardo
Reyes, governor of the state of Nuevo León . He studied first in the
private school of Manuela G. Sada in Monterrey, the Institute de Varones de
Loreto, and the Colegio Bolívar. He went to the Liceo Francés in Mexico City.
Then he went back to Monterrey to study in the Colegio Civil del Estado but
returned to Mexico City to earn a law degree from the Facultad Nacional de
Derecho on July 16, 1913.
In 1914 he went to Spain to write. That his father was one of
the most powerful politicians and generals in Mexico greased the wheels for him
and made living abroad possible but he was also talented in his own right. He represented Mexico
in various literary events and served in minor diplomatic posts in Spain and
France. He was a contributor to Spanish reviews and editor
of El Sol, a Madrid daily newspaper. He also edited the Mexico page of Revue
de Genevé. He was nominated for a Nobel Prize and won numerous awards. In
1916, he gave up poetry to concentrate on prose.
Among others, he published El paisaje en el poesía
mexicana del siglo XIX, Visión de Anáhuac, and Retratos reales e
imaginarios.
He died from a heart attack in 1959.
